Invercargill Golf Club has claimed this year’s MLT President’s Pennants title, after a closely-fought battle at Gore Golf Course on Sunday September 11.

The weather was perfect for golf and the four teams contesting the MLT President’s Pennants finals – Invercargill A, Green Acres, Gore and Queen’s Park – took advantage, playing highly competitive golf throughout the day.

The semi-finals played out in the morning, with Invercargill beating Queen’s Park 3-1, and Gore dealing to defending champions Green Acres 3 ½ - ½.

But the final, held during the afternoon, was a much closer affair with the scores tied between Gore and Invercargill A at 2-all after the finish of normal play.

As such, the respective teams’ top ranked players teed off for sudden death, with New Zealand representative Gore’s Vaughan McCall taking on Invercargill’s Cody Harper. The honours were decided on the second hole, with Harper ensuring Invercargill will get its name engraved on the sought-after trophy.

The MLT President’s Pennants is a stroke hole match play competition among Southland’s top club golfers.

Golf Southland chairwoman Robyn Boniface said the conditions were perfect for golf and she was thrilled to see the competition so close.

“There was some outstanding golf played, which was great to see,” she said.

“It was a great build up for the representative golf ahead of them and it was really good, competitive stuff.”

The winning Invercargill team was made up of Harper, Paul Adams, Craig Tinker and Kyle Dobbie.
